A Dangerous Downside to the Internet

Online Child Predators

Although the Internet offers infinite opportunities and possibilities,  the ability to connect with complete strangers can have its negative consequences.  The Internet allows people to interact with complete strangers, allowing for children to be put in a compromising situation.  Online child predators are individuals who attempt to sexually exploit children through the use of on-line services and the Internet.  According to the FBI, more then half a million pedophiles are online everyday   There are two types of pedophiles; ones who are seeking face to face meetings, and ones who collect and trade child pornography(FBI, 2014). According to John Shehan, CyberTipline program manager for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in Alexandria, Virginia, one in seven kids have been sexually solicited online.  (Kam, 2014)  Previously, online predators would scour online chat rooms, and MySpace, but have adapted to newer technology, and more popular social networks, like Facebook and Instagram.  The anonymity of the Internet can lead to trusting relationships that form very quickly.  One major issue, a lot of information about the child gets posted online, such as pictures, home address, school, and information about a daily routine putting children at a major safety risk.  This personal information can be very helpful to pedophiles, helping them create a bond with naive children, as well as learning about their activities and whereabouts.  In addition, with the use of location aware applications on a phone, a child could not even realize that they are posting their exact location online, putting them at major risk.  Predators use the Internet to their advantage, using disguises to be whoever they want to be.  These people focus on gaining a child's trust, forming an emotional connection and using it to exploit them.

Solutions?
Child predators have always existed, looking for places with kids, like playgrounds.  Technology has only made the process easier for predators, allowing easy access to a large array of children. Although I don't believe that there are any complete solutions to this problem, many preventative measures can be taken.  I have written some steps below that you can take to avoid online predators.

The Innocent Image Investigators are part of the FBI and work undercover online to stop child predators and help victims.

Internet Safety Tips

The younger generation uses technology and social networking frequently, but are the most naive when dealing with strangers.

  • Don't put personal information online!  Don't post your town, your address, or even your high school information online.
  • Explore the privacy settings of every social network you, or your kids are using.  You can personalize it to what you feel is appropriate.
  •  TURN OFF location aware application settings.
  •  For Parents- Utilize parental controls, talk about Internet safety, and explore your child's social networks.  Teach them how to use the Internet as a responsible source. Talk to your child about internet safety awareness. Parents should explain the dangers of coming into contact with a child predator. Remember, knowledge is power.
  • According to the FBI, if you find evidence of an online predator, you should immediately contact your local or state law enforcement agency, the FBI, and the National Center for Missong and Exploited Children.  In addition, save all of the evidence found.
  • Also, always remember that not everything you see online is true!

Reddit

Reddit deserves more!

What is reddit?
Reddit is a message board where users submit posts.  The posts get up voted or down voted by other users.  The reddit community up votes posts that they feel are worthy, and down votes those that they see as unworthy posts, determining the position of the post on the site.  Reddit is a source for what's new and popular on the web. The site offers a broad range of content for users to choose from.

Why reddit deserves to be more then just "a small potato".

1. The users control the forum!
The great thing about reddit is that the community gets to control the web page.   This eliminates annoying or irrelevant posts, as well as spam. Reddit is designed to let users with similar interests connect.  It also allows ordinary users to have a front page story! The beauty of users controlling the page is that it offers posts that are worth your time.  Reddit refers to their page as 'the front page of the Internet', showing the best, most interesting stories.

2. It has a little something for everybody!

Reddit's front page shows the sites most popular content, on top of having a wide variety of subreddits, Internet forums, where you can find just about anything. One of the most interesting subreddit is categories is IAmA, meaning I Am A ____ , a forum in which an array of people post who they are and invite users to ask questions. President Barack Obama even did an IAmA in 2012 for about a half hour answering users questions.
(Peters, 2013)

Another popular subreddit is AWW.  AWW is a forum on reddit that is devoted to the cutest things ever. This is one of the top posts on reddit currently in the AWW subreddit.

On a side note, the subreddit categories also use the voting system, contributing to some of the cutest pictures ever!  In other categories it ensures that posts are relevant.

Another great subreddit that reddit offers is news and world news.  Not only are you viewing the most popular news stories but users can interact with eachother, discussing their opinions. Reddit was talked about during the Boston bombings, one of the top posts was a compilation of all of the reports, stories, and pictures, helping reddit users understand what was going on at that time.

3. Quality Conversations
A great benefit that reddit offers users is the ability to have discussions with ANYBODY about a shared interest. Reddit users are known for being "more intelligent," leading to mostly interesting and constructive conversations.  Comments are also subject to the voting system, weeding out the stupid and offensive comments, and making room for the intellectual ones.  For example Atheism and Christianity are popular subreddits that generate a lot of discussion.  Reddit has thousands of subreddits and a search bar to help find the most obscure ones.  The ability to view and discuss random subreddits connects people based on mutual interests, allowing for interesting conversations to strike up.
(Ulaloom, 2012)
In Conclusion
Reddit deserves to have the title 'small potato' taken off. This site offers the top stories, uploaded and voted for by actual users.  Reddit's voting system helps eliminate irrelevant posts and comments while promoting the most popular ones.  The site offers intellectual conversations that users can also vote up or down, pushing the best comments to the top! These factors all contribute to the greatness of reddit.
